The short answer

Nerve conduction studies and electromyography, or EMG, assess how nerves and muscles function. They may help investigate numbness, weakness or suspected nerve compression. The results complement the history and examination rather than replacing them.

Nerve conduction testing uses small electrical stimuli and records responses. EMG may use a fine needle electrode in selected muscles. The clinician chooses the tests needed for the suspected problem and explains what sensations to expect.
